Mustang fans rejoice! This past Friday, October 14, the West Perry Mustangs faced off against the James Buchanan Rockets and finally broke their losing streak!
The Rocket Marching Band started the game pre-show with a performance entitled Big Band with music from the fifties. Within the first minute of the starting quarter, Mustang #10, Kenyon Johnson, scored the first touchdown. Not long after, #88, Gabe Puchalsky, brought the boys another touchdown. Two minutes into the game, the Mustangs were already up 0-13. With amazing teamwork by the boys, they kept the ball in their hands and moved it down the field. A pass from quarterback Dom Salinetro to #82, Joey Reisinger, scored the Mustangs another six points. Bringing the ball into the end zone himself, Dom scored yet another touchdown. Kicker Jake Quaker continued to score impressive field goals, bringing the score to 0-26 before the Rockets managed to score. The Rockets did eventually score a touchdown near the end of the first quarter, attempting a two point conversion but falling incomplete. Only forty seconds were left on the clock when Kenyon Johnson ran the field and brought in the final touchdown of the quarter. His score paired with Quaker's growing skills as kicker, the Mustangs ended the first quarter with a seventeen point lead. The start of the second quarter was slow, both teams battling it out to get their hands on the ball. Cameron May, Mustang #15, caught the ball in the end zone for another touchdown. As the quarter continued, James Buchanan kicked the ball in the end zone, the Mustangs earning a safety, bring the score up to 6-41. They continued running the ball, completely ruling the field. With one yard left to another touchdown, the boys brought the ball in once again, followed quickly by a run into the end zone by Terrance Quaker, #22, and one more in the quarter. Players #11, Nevin Shields, and #84. Jaden Hymans, made their break-out performances with amazing tackles and runs across the field. Halftime began with a score of 6-61.
After a half-time show performed by the Mustang Marching Band and James Buchanan's punt-kick finalists, the game commenced. The third and fourth quarter weren't as eventful as the first two when it comes to scoring, but the boys went hard on defense. The Rockets scored two touchdowns with two successful two-point conversions, but were also penalized for illegal procedures and having too many players on the field. Though the Mustangs didn't score again during the second half, they ended the game with a thirty-nine point lead.
Congratulations to the Varsity Mustang football team! It's impossible to pick star players of the night because the entire team worked hard and worked together to earn their first win. Keep the spirit up, boys! Let's hope for another win this Friday on Senior Night during the game against Mifflin.
