On Friday, September 9 fans flooded out to East Penn to watch the Varsity football teams compete. CBS 21 News was out to report on the game, a rival match between the Mustangs and the Panthers.
Hopes were high for West Perry during the first quarter. They ran the ball down the field the entire time, not losing stride. With a minute left on the clock and one yard to go, number 15, Cameron May, brought the ball in for a Mustang touchdown. Number 80, Scott Messner, came in to score the Mustangs their extra point, bringing the score 0-7 in West Perry's favor. No more than fifteen seconds later, though, East Penn's number 12 brings the ball in for a Panther touchdown. After a solid extra point kick, the first quarter ended with a score of 7-7. Flags flew during the second quarter, from false starts to personal fouls against both teams. Six minutes in to the second quarter, East Penn brought in another touchdown, but their kick attempt was no good. Mid-second quarter the score was 13-7. More flags were tossed, early starts and illegal blocks. Though the Mustangs didn't score second quarter, they worked hard at blocking the Panthers way, saved multiple times by tackles from number 88, Gabe Puchalsky.
After an entertaining half-time show performed by the Mustang Marching band, East Penn started the third quarter on the receiving end. Five minutes into the new quarter, East Penn brought the ball into the end zone for a Panther touchdown. They tried for a two-point conversion over a kick, but an illegal procedure foul was called against them. Their second attempt at the conversion was no good, leaving the score 19-7 with seven minutes left in the third quarter. The Mustangs got their hands on the ball, but after a fumble, it was back in the Panther's grasp. Mustang number 15, Cameron May, was hurt, but after being checked over went back to play full-force during the rest of the game. Same with number 14, Nate Salinetro, who suffered a foot/ankle injury. After being checked out he went back to the game full throttle. With two minutes left of the third quarter, East Penn brought the ball in for yet another touchdown, their kick good. The score was 26-7 when the Panthers intercepted the ball from West Perry, bringing it into the end zone. A flag was called on the interception due to illegal blocking, penalizing East Penn ten yards to the twenty-nine yard line, their touchdown invalid. Not long after, though, they brought in another score with no kick, leaving the score 32-7 at the end of the third quarter. Four minutes into the fourth quarter, the Panthers brought in their final touchdown of the game. A personal foul was called against them during their first kick attempt, bring them back fifteen yards to the twenty-five yard line. Just barely, the ball made it in, bringing the score to 39-7, where it stayed for the rest of the game. At the end of the fourth quarter, Mustang number 57, Austin Wonders, was escorted off the field with an injury. It is rumored that the broke his ankle during the final minutes of excitement.
Though the Mustangs lost once again, they showed just how hard-working they are. They overcame injuries and never gave up. There were obvious key players this game, those didn't stop running the ball and keeping the Panthers from advancing. These stand-outs are number 22, Terrence Quaker, number 88, Gabe Puchalsky, and our touchdown scorer number 15, Cameron May. Next Friday the boys play at home against Middletown.
