Banned Books Week is a time celebrated every year during which people discuss the censorship and banning of novels. For a bit more information on the concept of banned books, check out the article The (Censored) Authors's Say.
So what's the big deal about banning books? Everyone's opinions differ, and we'd love to hear yours! If you submit your opinion on the topic of banned/censored books to us here or on our Instagram page, we'll feature it in this banned book area! The submissions can be published anonymously and be as long/short as you please, we just want to hear your thoughts. What do I think, you may ask?
I believe that writing will never satisfy everyone. This is a lesson that is extremely important for people to know, not just writers. There will always be someone who doesn't like it, but that doesn't matter. Writers write what pleases them.
There are tons of things that turn people away from stories. For example: swearing, sex, drugs, alcohol, self-harm, mental disorders, disabilities, abuse, LGBTQ+, and many more. Some people are offended by things for religious reasons, are triggered due to their pasts, or have been raised that these things are simply taboo. That doesn't mean they can't be written about, though.
Just take a look at the list of banned books around the world! If you take a look at the drop-down bar for Banned Books 2016 you'll find a couple of banned book spotlights. Just because a few people think that somehow reading Harry Potter will turn their kids into witches/wizards doesn't mean no one should be able to read it. It doesn't make any sense! In my personal opinion, parents who believe their kids will pick up bad habits from reading books are too paranoid. If you're raising your child correctly and teaching them right from wrong, reading books shouldn't be a problem. If you're concerned, read the book with them or talk to them about their understanding of the information as they read. I strongly believe people shouldn't limited to reading certain books.
This is merely my opinion and not meant to offend anyone. Do you agree or disagree? Let us know!
