Do you know why students are off tomorrow? Why November 11 is such a special day?
November 11 became a national holiday in 1939, previously known as Armistice Day. The holiday was deemed Armistice Day because it is in honor of the armistice signed at 11 a.m on November 11, 1919 that ended the fighting during World War I. In 1954, President Eisenhower changed the holiday's name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in order to honor all of those who fought, fight, and have fought in war. Veterans Day is not to be confused with Armed Forces Day or Memorial Days, though the meanings of the three holidays are often mixed up. Armed Forces Day is celebrated the third Saturday in May in honor of all the men and women currently fighting in war. Memorial Day is celebrated the last Monday in May, though the actual date is May 30th, and celebrates all those veterans who are no longer with us. Veterans Day, November 11, celebrates all veterans- active duty or not, alive or deceased.
So, as you sleep in and enjoy your day off tomorrow, remember why. If you can, thank a veteran and think of all the good things they have done for our country, and the sacrifices they have made.
Happy Veterans Day to all veterans! We appreciate all that you have done and continue to do for us.
