Tis the season. Freshmen and seniors alike are planning their dates, dresses, looks, rides, and more for the special day. So how do you make the night one to remember- not for sweating your makeup off in the gym, but for having an amazing time?
1. Dress Sensibly
We've all done it- dressed to the nines with killer shoes, just to realize they're a painful hassle we would have been better off without. Though the weather outside may be chilly, a long, heavy dress will weigh you down with heft and sweat in the packed gym. Plus, long hemlines are easy to trip over, and for other people to trip over. This is from personal experience- tripping on another girl's dress is not a fun experience. Shoes, too, are painful and will keep you from wanting to dance. Wear flats or a short heel, or be prepared to take off your shoes and face the gym floor head-on.
2. Dance!
It's not called a Homecoming Dance for nothing. Even if you don't have a date, grab a couple friends and head out to the dance floor. Scratch that- you can even do it alone! Don't be too picky about the music that's being played. It will be the most overplayed, lyrically weak songs that make people sing out loud and hop around on the floor. Join in, you won't regret. If you're feeling shy joining in during freestyle songs, jump in when group dances start. No one gets judged during the Cotton Eye Joe, Cupid Shuffle, and the Wobble.
3. Pack Light, but Pack Right
When it comes to a dance, carrying around a purse isn't the best idea. You'll have to hold it the entire time or put it down somewhere in hope that nothing gets stolen. A small phone case that doubles as a wallet is the perfect size. You can carry your cell phone for photo opportunities and to call your ride, and you can store your money and ticket in it, as well. Also make sure to bring chapstick and hairbands. Makeup and the hot air in the gym will likely dry out your lips, and that can put a damper on the fun. Hair can get hot and sweaty, making hairbands a must have. Don't be afraid to mess up your hairdo- it's better to be able to have fun than sweat and want to go home.
4. Take Lots of Pictures
If you have a date, a group of friends, or are going solo- take pictures! Before, after, during. It'll be a great time! Do fun poses and just be silly. Later on in life, you'll be able to look back and remember the good times.
5. Have Fun!
This is the most important and obvious tip of them all! If you let drama and discomfort stop you from having a good time, you'll regret going. What was the point of paying money to go in the first place, then? Even if the night doesn't start out well, try to turn it around. Wipe away your inhibitions and have fun!
