Twenty Øne Piløts- that name was not a well known one until their new album, Blurryface , was released May 17, 2015. Their single, Stressed Out. started to get Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun some radio time. After Stressed Out hit the radio, the spotlight was shone on Ride, followed by Heathens. All three of these are great songs, but most new members of the Skeleton Clique (the band's fanbase) don't know of Twenty Øne Piløts older albums or that Josh was not a member of the band until 2011. Before Josh, there were two of Tyler’s high school friends: Chris Salih, who played drums, and Nick Thomas, who played bass guitar. The trio released Twenty Øne Piløts first album, Twenty One Pilots, before Nick and Chris went off to do their own thing. Then came Josh Dun as the new drummer of Twenty Øne Piløts. Josh’s first album was Regional At Best. This album was so big that record labels had to see what was happening in Columbus, Ohio. Twenty One Pilots signed with a label called Fueled By Ramen, where they got their first studio album, Vessel, and Blurryface followed two years later. Most Clique members know of Vessel, but not of their self-titled album or Regional at Best.
Twenty Øne Piløts has a new app available in both the ITunes App Store and the Google Play Store. This app has provided help for people in many ways, like when their voices became so loud that they could not handle it. Other Clique members have been able to talk them down from this. I was able to interview three people about this app and to say the least, they all love it.
I’ve learned a lot about Kayla when I interviewed her. “I was listening to an alternative radio station and I heard them. I really liked their music; there was something so amazing about their sound and lyrics, it just really grabbed my attention and I fell in love with everything they did,” she said when I asked her about how she got into Twenty Øne Piløts. Kayla said that her favorite song is Trees and that she always loved it, but when she went to see Tyler and Josh live and they played it she found it “just amazing”. Also, she loved the environment of being in the room with everyone singing, and they were just so happy. She has never been so happy before in her life than that moment, in the crowd, with the other Clique members of Portland. “There aren’t many lyrics, but every single one of them has so much meaning to me,” she says about the song. Kayla found the app because she got bored one day and searched “Twenty One Pilots” in the app store and it popped up, so she downloaded it and she now loves it. Her favorite part about the app is the public chats because she’s made many friends along with the ability to talk about things she can’t with her family or friends. She also finds people nice and caring on the app. The app has really helped her talk about what she kept bottled up, and the people who she talked to always understand and help her feel better and they are there whenever she needs them. She finally didn't feel alone. Finally, Kayla said that she feels like the Clique app gives her a second home because she didn’t feel like she belonged anywhere until she found the Clique
Siena, another girl I interviewed, said that a friend introduced her to Twenty One Pilots a few years ago and her favorite song is Migraine because it’s gotten her through her tough days. It’s also made her realize that she isn't alone in her struggles with depression. She found out about the app through Instagram because her friends messaged her about it. Like Kayla, Siena’s favorite part about the app is the chat rooms and that you can talk to anyone around the world. “Yes, having people to talk to and share experiences with is really helpful, especially when your friends don't really understand what you are going through. It's always just really nice to talk with people who actually listen to Twenty One Pilots instead of just knowing Stressed Out and Ride,” Siena said when I asked about how the app helped her. She also says that it is easier to talk to people that she doesn't know when she doesn't have to worry about losing a friend. Finally, Siena does feel like the Clique is a second home.
The third and final person I interviewed was 3CheersforDangerDays. She was introduced to Twenty One Pilots through social media in 2014 and she decided to check them out and fell in love. 3CheersforDangerDays loves the song Holding Onto You because of the overall meaning, which is to use your pain to create something and to never give up on your dreams. One of her friends on the app musical.ly got this app and told her about it so she got it. She also likes the fact that you can talk to other Clique members and connect through experiences involving TOP or just really anything. “The app has helped me realize just how many people feel the same way about TOP that I do,” she responded when I asked if the app has helped her. 3CheersforDangerDays said that talking to someone on the app was more comforting than a parent, sibling, or friend because it’s anonymous and she feels like they won't judge her for anything. So it’s just easier to share experiences and get an honest opinion. I asked 3CheersforDangerDays if the app has given her a second home her response was, “I’ll be honest, I'm not the most popular at my school, for example: I like different music… and whatever other reasons you can think of they’re probably accurate too. But yes, I feel like I have a second home there, everyone accepts me on the app, and it’s pretty much because we all have one thing in common, and that thing is TOP. We all connect through our love for them and yeah I've said that before but that’s because it’s true.”
Tyler and Josh have gone through a lot to get to where they are at now. I say this because Tyler said it himself, before they played Madison Square Garden. They always dreamed of playing there. Their ability to do so was not because of Josh and Tyler, but because of the Clique, all the support from their fans. It’s true. They went from playing small venues to selling out Hershey Park Stadium, which can hold 30,000 people. They also sold out Madison Square Garden twice, and pretty much every other venue that they have played or are going to play.
