Fall Play 2014: The Outsiders
by Hannah Vislocky
West Perry High School is bringing the world of the Outsiders to life when the students take the stage on November 14 and 15.
The show is based upon the beloved novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton. The Outsiders features many characters, known and unknown, and leaves room for new characters to step up and take a special place in the audiences’ hearts. The story of The Outsiders has been told many times, throughout theatrical productions, the 1983 film adaption, and it has been taught for many years in classrooms across the country.
Performances are at 7 pm. on November 14 and 15. Tickets cost $6 and are available for purchase on the Musical/Drama page of the West Perry website and are also available at the door.
Ponyboy, played by Wyatt Richard, leads the audience on a journey as he recounts events he has been through. His story exemplifies the tensions between the greasers and the socials ‘the socs’ and creates an unforgettable story for the audience.
To both the students’ and directors’ surprise, this year’s cast and crew features a wide range of students, from freshman to senior, and brings students together into a strong bond of community and friendship. After a tremendous loss of seniors last year, thoughts were that the program would dwindle, though the freshmen caught all by surprise when such a large number of them stepped up and came to both the auditions and crew meetings. This large amount of interest from new students caught both the returning students and directors by surprise.
Then Outsiders is West Perry’s 4th fall play, the past three being Humbug, a happy-go-lucky comedy performed in 2011, Witness for the Prosecution, a courtroom drama that took the stage in 2012, and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a family-friendly adventure that was brought to life last year.
Hopes are that The Outsiders will continue to create a name for the fall play program, just as Beauty and the Beast and Godspell have done for the spring musical. Directors are hoping that The Outsiders will draw in families as well as lovers of the novel from around the area and in the community.
Students are doing a series of dress rehearsals on the weekends and are preparing as they anxiously await the show.
Throughout the years there has been a love for the story developed by teachers, students, readers, and directors alike. Come to West Perry’s own production of The Outsiders on November 14 and 15, and experience the story for yourself.
