On September 2, 2016 the West Perry Mustang Varsity Football team stepped out onto the field for their first game. The crowd was eager to see if the boys could pull out a win against the opposing team, the Palmyra Cougars.
Gabe Puchalsky, Christian Puchalsky, Austin Wonders, and Nate Salinetro went out to the field first for the coin toss. West Perry started off the game on the receiving end. Late in the first quarter, with five minutes left on the clock, Palmyra's number 6, Peter Robertson, brought in a touchdown. With a valid extra-point kick, the score was 0-7. After an illegal shift penalty against Palmyra, the Cougar's number 42, Alon Rhette, brought in another touchdown with forty-six seconds left on the clock. With yet another valid extra-point kick, the score rose to 0-14 at the end of the second quarter.
After the halftime show performed by the Cougar's Marching Band, Palmyra's number 22, Carl Reigle, brought in another Cougar touchdown. The score shot up to 0-21 with two minutes left on the clock in the third quarter. After a nice run by Mustang number 22, Terrance Quaker, an illegal top-off penalty was placed against West Perry. The Cougar's number 22 again gained possession of the ball and took it into the endzone for a Palmyra touchdown. In the excitement, though, Mustang number 42, Jake Fadness, was hurt on the field. He was escorted out, suffering from a dislocated elbow. The injury was able to be fixed, but he didn't return to game play. After pausing the game to take of the injury, Palmyra commenced to redeem their extra-point, bringing the score to 0-28 with three minutes left in the third quarter. An illegal drop penalty was held against Palmyra at the end of the third quarter, but it didn't slow them down.
Only one minute into the fourth quarter, Palmyra's number 10, Braden Vernet, brought in a Cougar touchdown. The score increased to 0-35, Mustang fans looking grim in the stands. The Mustangs were penalized for a pass interference, but Mustang number 10, Kenyon Johnson, brought the ball into the endzone for West Perry's first touchdown. Scott Messner, number 80, came in to score West Perry their extra-point. West Perry supporters were thrilled, the score up to 7-35.
Though the Mustangs lost in the end, the score 7-35, they fought hard and made it on the board. The boys showed their skill, stand-outs including number 10 Kenyon Johnson and number 25, CJ Reyes. The Varsity team is suffering through a two-year losing streak, but there's always hope. Keep an eye out, because this young team could surprise us.
