On September 30, 2016, West Perry Varsity football set out against the Big Spring Bulldogs. The West Perry Marching Band started off the night by playing pre-show.
The Mustangs started out with the ball, moving it down the field with ease. They lost the ball, though, before scoring a touchdown. With the Bulldogs in control, they ran the ball down the field for a Big Spring touchdown. The score was 7-0 with two minutes of the first quarter. The second quarter started out the same, the Bulldogs bringing the score up to 14-0, and then scored again to bring the score to. With a few minor injuries and penalty flags, the first half of the game ended with the score looking grim for the Mustangs.
Halftime celebrated Big Springs Homecoming Court. Congratulations to their winners! Not even two minutes into the third quarter, Mustang number 10, Kenyon Johnson, scored a West Perry touchdown, bringing the score to 14-7. The Bulldogs came back, running the field the for a touchdown, but their attempt was no good due to a holding penalty. Their penalty cost them ten yards, but it didn't stop them from scoring yet again, raising the score to 21-7. In the excitement of the second half, Mustang number 62, Dave Doran, was injured. The ambulance was called to the field and he was taken out of the stadium. We are unsure of what his condition currently is. Once the game started again, Big Spring opted to kick a field goal, the ball barely making it in, landing them a score of 24-7. Mustang players fought back hard, though, number 22, Terrance Quaker, scoring a touchdown and giving the Mustangs a brighter chance. the score 24-14. Soon after, the Bulldogs took their revenge and scored yet another touchdown, the score 31-14. Terrance Quaker scored a touchdown once more and the boys completed a successful two-point conversion, bringing the final score to 31-22.
Though the boys lost, if they keep playing like they did on Friday, there's hope that a win could be in the future. They fought hard and lost by a merely a touchdown and a field goal- a better score than those in the past. All of the boys worked extremely hard- shout outs to our touchdown scorers Kenyon Johnson and Terrance Quaker and Jake Quaker for scoring both Mustang field goals. Other key players this game were Cameron May, Dom Salinetro, Nevin Shields, and Dave Doran. Keep on fighting, Mustangs!
