The highly anticipated Thanksgiving break is almost here. Many students are ready to hear that last bell ring in eighth period on Tuesday. Many of us are eager to sit down at the dinner table for our turkey meal, see family, and watch the big game. Some of us are even ready to hear Christmas songs and go holiday shopping. But, how did this great tradition start? Here is the history of the highly favored holiday--Thanksgiving!
-1621: First Thanksgiving held by pilgrims and Native Americans, celebrating a successful harvest.
-1623: Second Thanksgiving, held by pilgrims signifying long drought.
-1789: George Washington declares first national Thanksgiving in honor of our nation’s independence.
-1817: New York became one of the first states to make Thanksgiving an annual holiday
-1827: A campaign to make Thanksgiving a national holiday commenced from Sarah Hale.
-1863: During Civil War, Abraham Lincoln schedules Thanksgiving as the last Thursday in November.
-1939: Franklin Roosevelt moves thevThanksgiving date a week earlier to help the market due to the Great Depression at that time.
