Located in North and South Dakota lies the Sioux Native American reservation known as Standing Rock. The Natives who reside at Standing Rock are often referred to as “Sioux” and are typically members of the “Dakota” or “Lakota” nations, which signifies friends or allies. Standing Rock is positioned west of the Missouri river, which the Sioux use for all of the wild life the Missouri River has to offer.
Lately, the Sioux at Standing Rock have been under great stress and fear of a $3.7 billion and 1,200-mile oil pipeline stretching from the Bakken region of the Standing Rock reservation all the way to Illinois. This oil pipeline is routed to go through the reservation’s burial grounds and the Missouri River, which provides an abundance of drinking water to the Americans living near the river and also provides irrigation water for thousands of acres of farming and ranching lands.
By putting in this oil pipeline, many Sioux living on the reservation will have to leave their homes, and most importantly, the installation of the pipeline is unequivocally bound to destroy the environment. By simply cutting through the Missouri river, the fresh water will be polluted due to construction, which alters the lives of those who use it The installation of the pipeline will also destroy the burial grounds that have been there since the beginning of the Sioux reservation.
Recently, many people have been standing around the pipeline and protesting their beliefs on the matter. Many Americans have traveled all the way across the country in order express their beliefs and opinions. An insane amount of protesters have even been arrested, including actress Shailene Woodley. Shailene was able to get her arrest on video, in which the police are shown grabbing her jacket forcefully as she was walking back to her camper.
The installation of the pipeline is a pressing issue which results in a downfall for not only the Sioux but also the entirety of America. The controversy of putting in the pipeline or not is dividing the nation. Let’s come together and stand again with Standing Rock and save all of the unnecessary disputes that are in the foreseeable future. I stand with Standing Rock.
